Why AI search matters
Billions of queries are answered by AI assistants every month. Brand mentions and clear, quotable content often matter more than traditional backlinks for getting cited. Only a small share of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews for the same query — so platform-aware optimization pays off.

Follow this map to improve how AI search engines discover, read, and cite your site.
Don’t block GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot, or Google’s crawlers in robots.txt. If you block them, your pages won’t be considered for citations.

Host an llms.txt file at your site root (e.g. https://yoursite.com/llms.txt) to describe your site for LLMs. Include a short description, contact, and optional rules.
- Keep the format simple:

AI tools prefer clear, self-contained answers. Aim for passage lengths around 134–167 words that can be quoted as-is.
- Put the direct answer in the first 40–60 words of a section.
- Use definitions (“X is…”, “X refers to…”) and specific stats or facts.
- Avoid vague or purely opinion-based blocks; support claims with sources.
Use a clear H1 → H2 → H3 hierarchy, question-style headings, short paragraphs, and lists or tables. Add Schema.org (JSON-LD) so AI can parse entities and facts.
- FAQ, HowTo, and Article schema help AI understand and surface your content.
- Keep paragraphs to 2–4 sentences; use lists for steps or options.
Studies show brand mentions (e.g. on YouTube, Reddit, Wikipedia, LinkedIn) correlate more strongly with AI visibility than backlinks alone. Get your brand and URLs mentioned in discussions, profiles, and trusted hubs.
- Create or update Wikipedia, Wikidata, and relevant topical hubs where appropriate.
- Engage in communities (Reddit, LinkedIn) with useful, cite-worthy content.
AI models train on and cite diverse sources. Having your content or brand represented on multiple platforms (site, YouTube, docs, social) increases the chance of being cited across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity.
- Publish key facts and definitions on your site and in video or docs.
- Keep messaging consistent so AI can attribute and cite you correctly.
